Choosing The Best Method Of Cleaning Carpets And Upholstery

Quick dry cleaning uses the same equipment as normal shampooing and actually the two methods are identical in many ways. The only different is that quick dry cleaning, instead of using nylon brushes to scrub the carpet, uses a flat, absorbent pad which looks similar to a small round mop. The carpet is first sprayed with the quick dry cleaning solution before the machine buffs the carpet (think of buffing as being the same as trying to make your kitchen floor shine). The bonnet (the pad) absorbs the cleaning fluid and collects the dirt at the same time. Drying time is about an hour which is a lot more practical for high traffic areas.

Dry foam cleaning is a hybrid of the steam and shampooing methods. A machine with rollers first spreads foam over the carpet after which a vacuum cleaner is used to remove all the remaining foam and the dirt. The foam dries quickly, often within an hour or two.

A powder called dry absorbent compound containing detergents and solvents which are lightly spread over the carpet. Either the professional or you use a machine which brushes the mixture into the carpet fibers after which you leave the carpet for a short time while the powder encapsulated the dirt. Once a bit of time has passed, a vacuum cleaner is used so suck up the dirt as well as the remaining compound. This method eliminates the chance of your carpets going moldy since no water is ever applied.

How to clean upholstery

The determining factor when choosing the best method to clean upholstery is the type of material to be cleaned. Method To Replace The Fluorescent Ballast

Incandescent lamps are gradually being replaced by compact florescent tubes in many of the applications. This newer technology gives more visible light for the same amount of electrical input and therefore produces very less heat.

The basic elements of a compact florescent light are neon and mercury. Although florescent lights provide certain benefits worth considering, you should also consider some drawbacks.

Florescent lights consists of magnetic ballast that causes flickering of light that in turn cause these problems to both light sensitive and insensitive people. When you hear a loud humming coming from your fluorescent light fixture it is a good indication your ballast needs to be replaced.

The first step is, to turn off the electricity to that particular light fixture. Also, you would require some essential tools and equipments to accomplish the task. Having turned off the power supply, turn the fluorescent light to remove it from the bracket.

Locate the clip at either end of the light fixture that holds the casing in place and use needle nose pliers to turn the clip to release it. Then, pull the clip to release the casing. Pull the casing out of the light fixture to expose the ballast.

One can find blue, black, red and white wires near the ballast. Pry them with the tester to ensure no current coming to the light fixture. With the wire cutter, cut the wires several inches from the ballast. Unscrew the screws on either side of the ballast with a screwdriver and remove the old ballast. Position the new ballast in the light fixture and use a screwdriver to tighten the screws on each side of the new ballast.

Pair up the wires by color from the new ballast to the light fixture. Hold the pair of red wires with the exposed wire ends lined up side by side, twist them together once or twice and insert them into a wire nut. Twist the wire nut several times to connect the wires together. Repeat this step with the other pairs of wire.

Tuck the wires neatly into the light fixture and replace the casing. Use pliers to turn the clip to secure the casing. Install the fluorescent light tubes by inserting the pins on one end into the bracket and rotating the tube into the other bracket. Turn the power back on.

Plumbing Faucets And Valves

A valve is a device that regulates the flow of a fluid by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure.

Valves are quite diverse and may be classified into a number of basic types. Valves may also be classified by how they are actuated. For instance the compression valves, disk valves, ball valves, cartridge valves and the repairing valves.

Compression or stem type faucet – This is a two-handle faucet design. With a single faucet, you can enjoy both hot and cold water as per the requirement. You can tell a stem faucet by the way it feels when you turn it off. One can feel a rubber washer being squeezed inside the faucet. Compression valves possess o- rings beneath the faucet’s stem that tend to wear and tear with time.

Compression valves use stems of varying designs, but all designs utilize neoprene washers. However, compression faucets are much more prone to leaks due to the twisting motion which in time wears out the rubber seal at the bottom of the stem.

Cartridge valve also known as “washer- less” valves, and are controlled by only one handle, in contrast to compression valves. Cartridge valves use a single cylindrical cartridge made of either metal or plastic, which rests inside the faucet body. When the valve handle is lifted, the valve stem raises and its holes align with the holes of the cartridge. Leaks around the base of the cartridge are usually caused by corroded O-rings.

Next are the disk valves and are also washers less. They are used mostly in single-handle kitchen sink faucets, and are identified by the cylinder located inside the faucet. The inlet hoses of the plumbing system allow hot and cold water to pass through the valves, while the outlet hole directs the water to pass through the valve spout.

Ball valves, as the name implies, are stop valves that use a ball to stop or start the flow of fluid. These comprise of a cylindrical cap under the handle. If leaks come from the valves’ spout, tightening the cap commonly stops the leaks.

Over time, persistent water leaks can result in an increased water bill and can even cut a channel into the surface of a sink or bathtub. Thankfully, repairing water valve is a relatively easy task which can be performed quickly.
