How are Flowers Produced?

February 3rd, 2010

As one of nature’s most beautiful gifts, flowers grow in different types of climates and regions. The type of flower that flourishes in a specific region will depend on the climate and soil. There are different types of flowers with different lifecycles. Annual flowers are plants that complete their lifecycle in one season and biennial flowers take two years to complete there lifecycle. Flowers grow from seed germination to a mature plant that produces seeds. Monocots and Dicots are the two main classes of flowering plants.

For flower enthusiasts, how the seed becomes a mature plant is a helpful and informative story. The dicot class of plant seeds has two leaves in the plant embryo while the monocot seeds have one seed leaf. The plant embryo is very small and it is usually tricky to see where the stem ends and the root begins. There is an egg-shaped ovule within the ovary. The ovule is the part that develops into a seed. The embryonic root is called the radicle. The seed leaves contain food storage organs called cotyledons. The embryonic shoot is called the plumule. Depending on the environment where the particular plant lives, the outer layer will stop growing when the embryonic shoot (plumule) and embryonic root (radicle) over take the seed’s protective parts. Note that it doesn’t matter where the flower comes from – whether it be Newmarket flowers, or even Richmond hill flowers, the flower plant embryos do have these parts.

Germination is the period when the plant embryo begins to grow. There can be either external or internal influences that will cause a plant embryo to begin to develop. For instance, some seeds can be prompted to grow by manually cracking the seed coat. In the environment, freezing and thawing can cause a seed to crack open. As well, giving the seed water will cause it to absorb the water which decreases oxygen and thereby decreases anaerobic respiration. This decrease will cause the seed coat to crack which allows oxygen to enter the embryo. A fresh supply of oxygen with the water helps to fuel enzyme activity and this causes the seed to start developing. As well, in some plants, the warming temperatures and sunlight are needed to stimulate the process of germination.

Some flowers are produced as single plants while other flowers are produced in clusters. The clusters are referred to as inflorescences, which are one peduncle with a number of small stalks called pedicels, supporting individual flowers. There are a number of different ways that plant seeds spread to different growing spots. The wind can pick up and transport lightweight seeds for many miles. Birds are known for getting seeds stuck in their feet and carrying and releasing them in another area. As well, ants pick up and carry seeds to different areas, and bees are well known pollinators.

When one produces flowers at home by mechanical means, it is important to try to match the natural environment as much as possible. Every flower garden enthusiast knows the pleasure of growing flowers and how pleasing they are to the eye. Knowledge of the plant’s development will help when growing beautiful and stunning flowers in a garden or in the home.

Why You Should Consider Special Event Florists

January 16th, 2010

Planning a big party or wedding? If you need flowers, make sure to take some time to shop around. There are different types of florists, and your local retail shop may not be right for a big event. They may make beautiful arrangements, but for any event that needs more than six flower arrangements, consider a special event florist.

This type of florist is one that does large events exclusively. Some will even limit themselves to resort parties or weddings only. They generally do not have a retail shop where you can walk in and buy an arrangement or gift. But why should that be such a huge advantage over your local florist?

One reason is space. Usually event florists set up shop in a large warehouse or other big space. This may not seem like a big deal, but let’s say you have fifty tables at your event. The space available to a specialty florist means that containers can be prepped and laid out well beforehand. Then, a couple hours before your party, florists can work quickly and efficiently.

A small shop, by contrast, has limited space. Imagine you have, say, fifty arrangements ordered. In a regular flower shop they will have to start early and work longer to get the job done. Then where will they store the finished arrangements? Will they be stacked and crushed? Or, worse yet, will they get distracted by the retail traffic and be late bringing your flowers? As you can see, something as simple as inadequate space can cause many problems down the line.

Another big plus is refrigerator space. You may have noticed that flowers are almost always in some sort of cooler. Cool air keeps flowers fresh and looking good for longer. What happens behind the scenes is that florists order the flowers from the grower. The grower ships them in large boxes. Once they arrive, how they are handled can determine both how they look and how long they last.

Getting them into the cooler as soon as possible is critical. Specialty florists are used to handling a lot of flowers at once, which means they probably have a lot of space dedicated to coolers. They can get your flower refrigerated right away! A small shop with limited cooler space, however, may have to keep the flowers in a hot back room for days. This will drastically effect how long they last during your event.

Delivery is a challenge for a big order. Flowers can be fragile. Getting them safely to their destination takes specialized equipment and knowledge. Instead of cramming the arrangements into a small delivery van designed for just a few, specialty florists have systems and equipment designed to handle this kind of job.

Another huge advantage to this type of florist is the fact that many of them rent containers and other equipment for parties. Because of the space restrictions, small shops have no place to store a large quantity or variety of containers. A specialty florist may actually have other items, like pillars, candle holders, mirrors, and other decorative items for rent. This may save you quite a bit of money!

Check your local business directory and ask around. If you have bridal fairs in your area, it is worth checking them out. It’s a good place to find special event florists, even if you are not planning a wedding. Just make sure you ask if they do only weddings. Good luck with your party!

Fresh Vs Artificial Flowers: Which Are Better?

January 1st, 2010

Everybody agrees that decorating with flowers makes places and venues more lively and inviting. Flower bouquets are pleasing to the eye, and oftentimes make the occasion feel special. But which type of flowers should you prefer: fake or real flowers?

Part 1: Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are usually the way to go, traditionally speaking. Floral colors, shapes, scents and general aesthetics all contribute to creating a great ambiance. There is a lot of several picks, depending on the season.

However, you should also remember fresh flowers won’t last forever and can cost more. Fresh flowers need constant care & maintenance. You should ask your florist which flowers are available locally & are in season, since flowers that are imported and/or aren’t in season tend to be more expensive. This way, you can have high-class, fresh floral arrangements without needing to spend a a lot of money.

Part 2: Artificial Flowers

There are many types of artificial flowers to choose from. The most popular at the moment are silk flowers, mainly because they require little maintenance, and are are very affordable and realistic. Aside from requiring only minimal cleaning, some people claim not being able to guess that they are artificial unless they take a very close look!

Of course, fake flowers also have a downside. They don’t give out the fresh smells that only fresh flowers have. You can fake it by strategically putting good air fresheners nearby, but it still won’t be the same though.

Part 3: Which Is Better?

In deciding & selecting the types of flowers you need, there is no right or wrong answer. It will all depend on the occasion or your purpose. For special occasions & serious home gardeners, fresh flowers are a fantastic choice. For indoor home & office accents, realistic fake flowers would probably be your best bet. Before investing in flower arrangements, ask yourself which type is more practical for you and your budget.

Some Tips To Make Your Bouquets Last

January 1st, 2010

Flowers are one of the meaningful gifts and liveliest decorations for nearly any occasion, all year ’round. Even offices and homes use them for decorations to make the place more lively and more comfortable. What makes these gifts of nature so great is that they look and smell amazing. They have bright colors, unique shapes, and they have the most wonderful scents only nature can give.

The only problem is that flowers tend to wilt prematurely if you don’t take care of them well. Not everyone are florists and gardeners, but here are some surefire ways to make bouquets you receive last a little longer:

- If you receive flowers that are in a box, act as quick as you can. Drench them in water, or preferably in floral foam or flower food solution. These can be purchased from your florist.

- Remember to always use a clean vase with ample space, and use clear water every day. Once the flower food solution or water becomes cloudy, replace it all right away.

- No flower food or flower foam? You can make your own! Simply mix a teaspoon of bleach, a tablespoon of sugar, and a gallon of water. Viola! Your homemade flower food. If these ingredients are unavailable, try mixing a 12-ounce can of clear, non-diet soda (like Sprite or 7-Up) with half a gallon of water. The acid in the soda will slow down growth of bacteria in the water, while the sugar will feed the flowers.

- Re-cut your flower stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp cutting tool, such as a sharp knife, good pair of scissors, or pruning shears. Cut the stems underwater to allow more water absorption instead of air. A 45-degree angle stem cut can also improve liquid absorption of the plants.

- Some flowers will last longer than others in the bouquet. Once they wilt, take them from the arrangement.

- Get rid of leaves that will be below the vase’s waterline, to lessen bacteria growth in the water.

- Keep flowers in a cool, dry spot, in approximately 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It is recommended to keep them away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators, to avoid premature dehydration and wilting.
