Fresh Vs Artificial Flowers: Which Are Better?

January 1st, 2010

Everybody agrees that decorating with flowers makes places and venues more lively and inviting. Flower bouquets are pleasing to the eye, and oftentimes make the occasion feel special. But which type of flowers should you prefer: fake or real flowers?

Part 1: Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are usually the way to go, traditionally speaking. Floral colors, shapes, scents and general aesthetics all contribute to creating a great ambiance. There is a lot of several picks, depending on the season.

However, you should also remember fresh flowers won’t last forever and can cost more. Fresh flowers need constant care & maintenance. You should ask your florist which flowers are available locally & are in season, since flowers that are imported and/or aren’t in season tend to be more expensive. This way, you can have high-class, fresh floral arrangements without needing to spend a a lot of money.

Part 2: Artificial Flowers

There are many types of artificial flowers to choose from. The most popular at the moment are silk flowers, mainly because they require little maintenance, and are are very affordable and realistic. Aside from requiring only minimal cleaning, some people claim not being able to guess that they are artificial unless they take a very close look!

Of course, fake flowers also have a downside. They don’t give out the fresh smells that only fresh flowers have. You can fake it by strategically putting good air fresheners nearby, but it still won’t be the same though.

Part 3: Which Is Better?

In deciding & selecting the types of flowers you need, there is no right or wrong answer. It will all depend on the occasion or your purpose. For special occasions & serious home gardeners, fresh flowers are a fantastic choice. For indoor home & office accents, realistic fake flowers would probably be your best bet. Before investing in flower arrangements, ask yourself which type is more practical for you and your budget.

Ten Good Reasons For Sending Flowers

January 1st, 2010

Even in the past, flowers have been used to send messages of affection, love, joy, & even discontent. As a matter of fact, flowers have been used as a coded language dating back to the Victorian era, called floriography. For any occasion, flowers could be the most effective & nearly fool-proof way of showing your emotions. Here are Ten reasons why you may want to send a flower arrangement to someone special to you:

1. Birthdays – A nice way of letting a birthday celebrator know that she is special is with a nice bouquet. Oftentimes, these bouquets are accompanied by fancy wrappers and balloons.

2. Graduation – Sending flowers for someone’s graduation is a great way to recognize this special day of achievement.

3. Anniversary or Valentine’s Day – The traditional “dozen red roses” couldn’t be any more romantic on special days like this. Some florists even offer chocolates or teddy bears to be included in the arrangement.

4. Housewarming – A beautiful, decorative flower basket, or even a fruit and flower basket, will bring life and color to a new home.

5. Funeral – In the poor event that a friend passes, a funeral flower arrangement is a well-appreciated thoughtful gesture that shows how much you care for that person & those he/she has left behind.

6. Mother’s Day – Sending a bouquet or basket of flowers to your mom during Mother’s Day is a great way of showing appreciation for all the things she has done. This day is one of the busiest days for florists each year, because it is also the most common way of sending love to mothers

Some Tips To Make Your Bouquets Last

January 1st, 2010

Flowers are one of the meaningful gifts and liveliest decorations for nearly any occasion, all year ’round. Even offices and homes use them for decorations to make the place more lively and more comfortable. What makes these gifts of nature so great is that they look and smell amazing. They have bright colors, unique shapes, and they have the most wonderful scents only nature can give.

The only problem is that flowers tend to wilt prematurely if you don’t take care of them well. Not everyone are florists and gardeners, but here are some surefire ways to make bouquets you receive last a little longer:

- If you receive flowers that are in a box, act as quick as you can. Drench them in water, or preferably in floral foam or flower food solution. These can be purchased from your florist.

- Remember to always use a clean vase with ample space, and use clear water every day. Once the flower food solution or water becomes cloudy, replace it all right away.

- No flower food or flower foam? You can make your own! Simply mix a teaspoon of bleach, a tablespoon of sugar, and a gallon of water. Viola! Your homemade flower food. If these ingredients are unavailable, try mixing a 12-ounce can of clear, non-diet soda (like Sprite or 7-Up) with half a gallon of water. The acid in the soda will slow down growth of bacteria in the water, while the sugar will feed the flowers.

- Re-cut your flower stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp cutting tool, such as a sharp knife, good pair of scissors, or pruning shears. Cut the stems underwater to allow more water absorption instead of air. A 45-degree angle stem cut can also improve liquid absorption of the plants.

- Some flowers will last longer than others in the bouquet. Once they wilt, take them from the arrangement.

- Get rid of leaves that will be below the vase’s waterline, to lessen bacteria growth in the water.

- Keep flowers in a cool, dry spot, in approximately 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It is recommended to keep them away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators, to avoid premature dehydration and wilting.

Let Flowers To The Talking For You

December 31st, 2009

Dating back to historical times, flowers have been a profession of kindness. We usually present them to those we love and care for. We gift flowers to let them find out how special they are, to show admiration, to celebrate occasions, or even to sympathize. What we don’t know is that giving certain kinds of flowers, and even their colors, actually have definitions of their own.

Floriography: (Language Of Flowers)

During medieval and Renaissance times, flowers were often given moral meanings. This is apparent in art where saints are often portrayed with flowers that symbolize the saints’ virtues. In an edition of Sixteenth Century Journal, Liana DeGirolami Cheney said that “some of the Christian symbols for Virginity or Chastity are the white rose, the myrtle, a vessel or vase, the lily, and the unicorn.”

Back in Victorian times, flowers were used initially to create or add emotion. The language of flowers, sometimes referred to as floriography, began being used as a discreet form of communication. During the 18th century, sending coded messages using flowers became popular. Based on a Turkish secret language of flowers, known as Persian Salaam, a coded bouquet could be sent to profess feelings of attraction or even love.

Back in 1819, a book entirely about meanings of flowers called “Le Language des Fleurs,” was written by Madame Charlotte de la Tour. A similar book, “Language of Flowers” by Kate Greenaway, was written in 1884 and is still being used today.

Japan also has their version of floriography, called “Hanakotoba.” Greeting cards in Japan use the Hanakotoba code, and still use the flower-language in popular culture such as in films and animation, like the anime series “Wei Kreuz.”

How To Keep Your Bouquet Flowers Fresh For Longer

November 19th, 2009

All of us share a liking for flowers, and bouquets are favourite gift options for special events like birthdays and weddings. However, one major disadvantage with a bouquet is that the leaves and flowers dry up very soon and the bouquet hence loses all its beauty and charm. You may purchase artificial flowers if you do not like the idea of fresh flowers withering away, but artificial flowers will not have the same appeal as the real ones.

Though it is impossible to keep bouquets fresh for eternity, you can use some tips to ensure that their vibrancy is not lost too soon. Here are some tips by which you can keep the appeal of your bouquet for a few days.

Firstly, you should ask from the florist the time span that the flowers in the bouquet are expected to live, as it is an accepted fact that some flowers remain in bloom for a longer time, like roses and lilies. You have to tell the florist to fill the bouquet with flowers that remain in bloom for a longer time span than others.

To keep a bouquet that you have received from someone fresh, you can keep it in a vase filled with water after you cut its stems. The life of flowers is slightly increased by doing this. If some leaves or flowers have begun to wilt, you can weed them out so that the bouquet doesn’t look ugly with dry leaves sticking out.

You must keep the vase at a location where it is able to receive sufficient sunlight and fresh air from outside. Flowers wilt soon when they do not receive sufficient air and sunlight, and if you provide them these natural elements, you can be sure that your bouquet will endure for a much longer time. However, the sunlight falling on the flowers should not be direct as that way the moisture will be lost and they will die quickly.

Factors To Think About While Selecting An Online Florist

November 19th, 2009

Flowers are the best way to express all kinds of emotions. Flowers can express your joy or help you cheer up your friends and near and dear ones without making use of words for the purpose.

People have been purchasing flowers and bouquets from offline florists for ages. However, with the arrival of the internet and with a lot of the shopping going online, florists have also started offering their services through the internet to help you in sending flowers anywhere across the globe. The best aspect of an online florist is that you can avail its service from the confines of your residence or office. However, in spite of the advantages of an online florist, you should consider certain factors before choosing an appropriate online florist.

First of all, you should see how much experience does the florist have and for what duration he has been running his company and offering the service online. This will help you determine the reliability of the florist and his standard of service.

Secondly, you should see if the florist is offering flowers of good quality at the right price or not. You can go through the online reviews to see if you are getting quality products and service for the money you spend.

Thirdly, the means of delivery of the flowers must be convenient. It is essential to figure out whether your selected florist makes use of a courier or has a doorstep delivery. Doorstep delivery is always a better alternative, as this will ensure that the flowers are not damaged in transit. Many online florists enter into business partnerships with retail florists in the locality, and thus can usually deliver fresh flowers.

Finally, always make sure that the online florist has a secure means for payment. Security is of prime importance in any transaction that you make online, and so you should see that the bank information that you furnish does not get intercepted by unscrupulous persons.

When Does Flower Giving Originate

November 18th, 2009

Down the ages, human feelings have found great expressions through the tradition of giving flowers or bouquets. People often step into a florist shop to buy flowers for all occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, to congratulate someone, to apologize, or just to lift one’s drooping spirits.

It is believed that this custom has roots in prehistoric traditions whose evidence has been unearthed by archaeologists at archaeological sites. Ancient Greek mythology, Chinese stories and history concerning the Romans and Egyptians all show that flowers had a very important part to play in their culture. Gifting flowers was considered the most effective means to convey one’s feelings in these cultures. The ancient Greeks even considered some flowers to be associated with divinity.

The Middle Ages saw a continuation of this tradition, and France and England were mainly responsible for carrying this tradition down the ages. The present custom of assigning a particular meaning to each flower was imported to the West from Turkey, from where the French and the British acquired it and disseminated it in Europe.

Flower gifting acquired much prevalence among the Victorians who greatly indulged in this custom. Demonstrating emotions verbally and before everybody was against the tradition during the Victorian period, and hence people used subtle means to express their feelings in the form of gifting flowers or bouquets.

This period saw the rolling out of guidelines for giving flowers or bouquets that we still follow. For instance, if you purchased a beautiful bouquet of red roses from the florist and gave it to your beloved upside down, she will definitely be angry with you. The reason being that while red roses stand for love, gifting them upside down symbolizes resentment. In fact, a large number of books were printed and disseminated on the language of flowers in the’th century.

Time has not been able to erode this custom, and people in the present times still find flowers to be the best means to show their emotions. In the present age, the custom of giving flowers or bouquets is ripe with different connotations, and rules and regulations concerning the propriety of the act have gained paramount importance. Giving a bouquet of red roses is considered to be an expression of love, on the other hand lilies are seen as representing attractiveness and purity. A yellow coloured rose is seen as a representation of friendship, while grief is best expressed by a single marigold.

Flower giving history keeps on to be written. There were times that a woman giving flower to a man is very improper. Today it no longer registers as out of the ordinary. Virtual flowers and Internet florists allow new ways to deliver virtual or true flowers anyplace in the earth. Through development of science and technology, flowers can now easily bloom all year-round.

Once, only particular flowers could be found only in particular regions or terrains, which is not the case in this progressive age of science and technology. If you are located in Singapore, then a visit to a Singapore flower shop will surely provide you with the best quality flowers, both regional as well as imported varieties, guaranteed to express your feelings to your dear ones in a beautiful manner.
